Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis)
Serviceberry or juneberry is a wonder group of trees and shrubs native to North America. When I first tasted berries from the trees planted in the cemetery near our house they reminded me of strawberry flavored blueberries. Pink in color, mild but sweet, growing on a tree, these little berries are perfect for beautifying your yard, feeding birds and wildlife and feeding yourself. Our variety is native to the eastern US and grows into a small tree that thrives in the understory, but also loves to grow in full sun. Unfortunately, deer love the leaves of serviceberry, so fencing or protection is needed.
