Wild Indigo Shrub (Amorpha fruticosa)

$15.00

The plant we named ourselves after! This unique shrub is also called river locust, bastard indigo and false indigo shrub, but we call it wild indigo shrub. It grows to be around ten feet wide and tall. The flowers bloom in early spring supporting pollinators with some of their first food of the season. Later the seeds are eaten by birds (not many) like the bobwhite quail. We love growing Wild Indigo for it’s ability to fix nitrogen and build healthy soil. It’s a favorite companion plant in the Garfield Community Farm food forest. Plant in full sun to part shade in an area of the garden where a more wild look is favored. This shrub can be quite precocious, growing very quickly and reproducing anywhere the seeds fall. It thrives in dry sandy soils, along river banks, and seemingly anywhere we invite it to grow.
