Black Currants (Ribes sp)
Black Currants are a wonderful addition to the food forest, filling shady gaps where other berries would fail. Black currants are high in antioxidants and many other nutrients. They’re very tart and work great as an addition in mixed berry pies, smoothies and ice cream. Where plants like blueberries need acidic soil to thrive, currants do well in neutral to alkaline soils. We’ve found they love the alkaline soils of urban Pittsburgh. We recommend some protection from deer until the shrubs reach a mature size, though deer seem not to like the leaves.
